The Medici Chapels

Dansk guide i Firenze > Risultato della ricerca

Michelangelo worked in this place, creating some of his most outstanding works, during what might have been the most difficult period of his life. His story is deeply connected to the one of the Medici dynasty and this visit gives you a chance to get closer to him as well as to his patrons.

The Medici Chapels are right behind the Basilica of San Lorenzo, to which they are connected. The museum consists of various environments, all built to enclose the tombs of the members of this famous family, which started as bankers and ended up as Grand Dukes of Tuscany, ruling Florence for about 300 years.

The Crypt is where you will find the tombs of all the Grand Dukes and their families. The Chapel of the Princes was meant as the actual mausoleum; a stunning construction decorated with coloured marble and semi-precious stones. And finally, The New Sacristy, with architecture, tombs and sculptures by the great Michelangelo. During the centuries, every artist visiting Florence would come to this place, gazing in awe at the renaissance genius’ innovative and creative art.

The museum is also housing part of the Treasure of San Lorenzo, with precious reliquaries, created during the centuries for the Medici family, by the Florentine goldsmiths.

I suggest to combine the visit to the Medici Chapels with a visit to the Basilica of San Lorenzo, where you will find the tombs of the first members of the family. You will find more information about this site clicking the “Basilica of San Lorenzo” button on the main page.
